Very good athlete, can escape pressure, and throw accurately on the run
Safe and smart with the football, doesn't make bad decisions
High football IQ, reads defenses well, and knows the game
Quick release
Very accurate on underneath passes
Experienced, 4 year starter against top competition
Puts good touch on his throws
Can run for first downs
Good leader, and good locker room guy
Cons
Mediocre arm strength, really has to gear up to put zip on his passes
Short, will have trouble seeing over the defense
Footwork is not very good, needs to learn to step into the pocket and take a hit
Not used to taking passes from under center
Must learn timing of 3 and 5 step drops, and hitting receivers out of breaks
Inaccurate deep ball
Needs to move through his progressions better
Overall
I feel Colt McCoy is very overrated, and will not be a franchise QB at the next level, his upside is what 49ers QB Alex Smith is, right now. McCoy though seems to be a lock to end up a Cleveland Brown, at the very latest with their first pick of the second round, if they don't trade up higher. McCoy does not posses many of the things that are vital to be a successful QB at the next level, he does not have a strong arm, has a tough time with 15+ yard out, and stick routes, he doesn't throw an accurate deep ball, and really has to gear up to fit passes into tight window. Also he does not have the height you want, everybody always talks about Drew Brees when comparing short QB's, Brees is the exception to the rule, fact is that taller QB's can see over the line and defense better, and simply put, are better able to identify who is open. Also coming out of the spread option offense at Texas, he will need to learn how to take the ball out from Center, and work on the timing of his throws coming out of the 3 and 5 step drops. McCoy has the intangibles you love though, was a winning player at Texas, great athlete, and a good leader. Maybe McCoy will prove me wrong, but for now, I wouldn't take him any higher than the 4th round.
