Draft Geek: How did you feel the combine and your pro-day went? Were you satisfied with how you performed in the drills, and also the interviews?
Jamar Chaney: The combine was a great experience. I went there to show that I was one of the most athletic linebackers in the nation & I think I proved that. I was a top performer in everything I did at the combine, also ran the fastest 40yd dash as a linebacker. Loved the interview, cause I just love talking about football, all the different schemes the different teams run & what we ran while I was at Mississippi State, I love talking X & O’s. Pro-day went great as well, I ran the 40 again, and they had me anywhere from a 4.45 to 4.48. I have a lot of confidence in my speed and I wanted to wow the scouts & NFL personnel again. Positions drills I think went better than my 40, I think I killed them, showing that I just don’t have straight 40 speed, I have football speed, speed in short closed areas, & being able to flip my hips & run like a DB
DG: We all hear about the crazy questions prospects get asked at the combine. What was the weirdest question you got asked? (And if you could) How did you answer it?
JC: Craziest question hmmmmm. Craziest question had to be “have I ever cheated on my girlfriend?” And of course I answered, “No, I haven’t!”DG: Have you found the NFL Draft preseason to be fun or stressful? What has been the least enjoyable part?
JC: This process has been a lot of fun to me, playing in the senior bowl, getting to know & play with different players around the nation. Getting a chance to go to the NFL combine & showcase my talents to all the NFL personnel & compete (which is something I love to do, compete) with all of the best linebackers in the nation was an amazing & fun experience. The least enjoyable part had to be all the medicals at the combine, for the first to days we did medicals for at least 4 hours straight a day & the 2nd day it was pretty much all day
DG: What do you consider to be your greatest strength on the field, and what would you most like to improve on?
JC: My greatest strength has to be my speed & my instincts. I feel I can run with anyone, Tight ends, running backs & some wide outs. I feel I can match up one-on-one with the best tight ends so you won’t have to waste a safety to cover him, just little things like that. I also have very good instincts, studying a lot of film to get an advantage of the offense we’re going up against. Recognizing different formations, what they like to do out of those formations, run/pass indicators, what they like to do on the money down (which is 3rd down). Just stuff like that, that makes it a lot easier for not only you to make plays, but your teammates as well. Things I would like to improve are pretty much just my overall game. You can never be too good to get better, no matter who you are, so for me its just getting better everyday at everything I can till I'm done playing football.
DG: Where have you realistically heard is the range you will be drafted in?
JC: I really don’t know, I try not to worry about or look into that stuff. Cause really you never really know when your going to be pick till they actually pick you. Unless your Bradford, Suh, or McCoy, they're pretty much the top 3 picks. LOL!
DG: What current or former N.F.L linebacker do you compare yourself to?
JC: I try not to compare myself to other linebackers that are in the NFL, simply because I haven't did what they have done, and I'm not in the league yet. But my favorite player ever is Ray Lewis, I love his passion for the game & the way he competes out there, never wanting to lose. I also like Jerod Mayo (who is one of my good friends) the way he plays. Jon Beason, Patrick Willis (even though he played for Ole Miss lol) DeMeco Ryans, D.J. Williams. Guys like that who go out there and give it everything they got on the field, same thing I do when I'm out there, whether in practice or in the game.
DG: What will an N.F.L team be getting with Jamar Chaney off the field in terms of attitude, and personality?
JC: Jamar Chaney off the field is a very nice & well respected guy. I love to work out and do anything and everything to get better. (any & everything thats legal LOL!). I love to interact with the fans, cause if it wasn't for them, there wouldn't be an NFL. Anything I can do to give back. I'm very strong in my faith in my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, He's first by far in my life. Never would've made it this far without Him. Just ask any coach, teammate, students, teacher, anybody in Starkville about me & they'll say the same.
DG: What current N.F.L player are you most looking forward to meeting or playing against?
JC: Haven't put much thought into it, but if I had to pick someone, with me being a Linebacker, I would have to say Peyton Manning. One of the best quarterbacks & one of the best overall players to play the game. The way he studies & prepares for a game, than go out there & make it look so easy is amazing. That's the way I want to be on the defensive side of the ball, like Peyton Manning is on the offensive side, He's second to none.
DG: What do you got playing on your Ipod to get you going on Game day?
JC: I really don't listen to music before a game unless their playing it loud on the speakers in the locker room like we do at Mississippi State or on the Stadium speaker. I like to just focus on the game plan & visualize the game in my head before I go out there & go HAM.
DG: Thanks so much for the time Jamar, and hope everything goes well in the draft, and your pre-draft preparation.
