Second Edition. Updated: January 13th
#1)St Louis Rams- Ndamukong Suh (DT Nebraska)
---
The Rams are in dire need of a franchise Quarterback and Jake Locker very likely would have been the pick here had he not decided to return for his senior season, with that said neither Jimmy Clausen, or Sam Bradford are good enough to justify passing on Ndamukong Suh, without a doubt the best player in the draft, and the best player on defense to come out since Charles Woodson. He is a can't miss prospect that will immediately make a difference on their defense and will give some much needed help to former top-5 pick Chris Long. For all 3 of you who have not watched him play, he is a dominant force up the middle, who demands a double team, gets a push up the middle, and can also rush the passer, he excels at everything you want from a DT, and is not at all a reach at #1.
#2)Detroit Lions- Gerald McCoy (DT Oklahoma)
---
Anybody involved with the Lions needs to realized that this pick must address the front 4, the most important aspect to a defensive is right now their biggest weakness. Obviously Ndamukong Suh is number 1 on their board and will be the pick if he is there, but Gerald McCoy is no slouch in his own right. At 6-4 295 he has excellent size, though he excels in using his speed and quickness to get after the Quarterback, he his very athletic but also has good enough strength to get a push up the middle and collapse the pocket. McCoy will be a dominant 3 technique defensive tackle in the pros that will demand a double team, get more than the usual amount of sacks from his position, and will free up blockers and space for the other D-lineman on the Lions roster.
#3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Russell Okung (OT Oklahoma State)
---
The general consensus around the draft world is that the Buccaneers will select all-world safety Eric Berry, but a Tampa Bay team that has so many holes cannot afford to spend a pick on a position where they already have a good young player in Tanard Jackson. They need to build this thing right and get strong in the trenches and after taking franchise QB Josh Freeman in last years draft, they can now draft a franchise tackle to protect him for years to come. At 6-5 300 Okung has ideal size for a Left Tackle, he is extremely athletic, very strong at the point of attack, and is the number 3 player on our board. He has all the tools and abilities to be an elite Left Tackle in the pros.
#4) Washington Redskins- Sam Bradford (QB Oklahoma)
---
The Redskins now run by Mike Shanahan should look to add a face to their franchise, the Skins are not completely devoid of talent and have some good pieces on defense, so this pick really needs to address the QB position or the offensive line. Sam Bradford despite missing almost his whole junior season with an injury to his throwing shoulder is still the best QB in the draft, he is healing up just fine and should perform well at the combine and at his pro-day. While on the field in his sophomore season he showed that he could make any throw on the field, he has a strong arm, throws a good deep ball, and is very composed under pressure and makes good decisions. He will need to adjust to a pro-style offense and taking the ball out from under center, but he is a very smart guy and that shouldn't be a problem for him.
#5) Kansas City Chiefs- Eric Berry (Safety Tennessee)
---
This may end up being the steal of the draft, and a perfect scenario for the Chiefs. The number 2 player on our board (Number 1 on some others), Berry is everything you want in a safety prospect, he has phenomenal speed and instincts, quick to the ball, and is a playmaker on defense, evidenced by his 14 interceptions and 3 touchdowns in only 3 years at Tennessee. He is the epitome of a ball hawk who is always around the football making plays, a heavy hitter, sure tackler, and great in coverage, its very hard to pick holes in his game. He would be a godsend for the Chiefs defense who currently have Jon McGraw (Who?) and Bears castoff Mike Brown starting at safety. He can step in from day 1 and will make a huge impact.
#6) Seattle Seahawks- Anthony Davis (OT Rutgers)
---
It's looking to be the end of the line for Hall of Fame left tackle Walter Jones, he has battled injuries and age for the last 2 years, and the Seahawks offense has just not been the same, Matt Hasselback is constantly under fire, and the Running Game has sputtered with no holes to run through. Seattle finds their replacement in Rutgers left tackle Anthony Davis, he has possibly the best combination of size and athleticism of any tackle in the draft, at 6-6 325 he is a Monster, he has the power and physicality to excel in the run block, and the quick feet and hands to be dominant in pass protection. A little bit raw right now, but if he can put it all together he has the potential to be a dominant left tackle in the pro's for many many years.
#7) Cleveland Browns- Rolando McClain (ILB Alabama)
---
Cleveland finished their season off strong with a 4 game winning streak, saving Eric Mangini's job, and now with the big show coming to town in Mike Holmgren, the Browns future is not as dim as it used to be. That being said the Browns have many holes on their roster especially on the defensive side of the ball, Rolando McClain makes all the sense in the world here at 7, he is without a doubt the best linebacker in the draft, at 6-5 260 who runs a 4.5, he is a physical freak. Great speed to get from sideline to sideline in an instant, explosive to the ball and very good in coverage. He is also a great leader on defense, who has smarts and a high football IQ, he is the full package on defense, and with some free reign inside the Browns 3-4 defense he can step in immediately and start making plays.
#8) Oakland Raiders- Trent Williams (OT Oklahoma)
---
The Raiders defense is adequate and the recent improvement of the offense under Bruce Gradkowski have proved just how bad Jamarcus Russell really was, though only his 2nd year as a starter expect the Raiders to give him one last shot and bring in a veteran to have a training camp battle. We've got the Raiders selection LT Trent Williams in this position, at 6-6 325 Williams is a mammoth, he excelled at Right Tackle in 08 for the Sooners, but struggled at times this year in his switch to Left Tackle, though he was still named to the AP All American team. He has flashed his potential to be a dominant Left Tackle, with great athleticism, size, quick feet and hands. If he can put it all together he will be a pro-bowler one day, and that upside is enough to justify the Raiders selection of him, a nice piece to the Raiders otherwise dreadful O-Line.
#9) Buffalo Bills- Bryan Bulaga (OT Iowa)
---
The struggles of the Bills offense this year can be directly tied to the atrocious play from the offensive line, especially at the Left Tackle position where they were never able to replace Jason Peters who they traded to the Eagles before the season. Making whoever was under center look terrible and completely handcuffing the entire offense, this pick needs to be a Left Tackle, and the best one on the board right now is Bryan Bulaga out of Iowa. He's got great size at 6-6 315 he is a nasty player who bullies smaller defensive players, and uses his arms and hands extremely well to make up for a lack of elite athleticism. He excels in the run block and will be able open up the running game and add some much needed protection for whoever will be under center this upcoming season.
#10) Denver (Via Chicago)- Terrence Cody (DT Alabama)
---
The Broncos receive this pick from Chicago in the infamous Jay Cutler trade, started the season off 6-0 but still managed to miss the playoffs, the defense that played so well in the beginning of the season really collapsed down the stretch. Terrence Cody is an ideal nose tackle who will eat up blockers and get a push up the middle, at 6-5 365 (allegedly) he is monstrous earning the nickname Mount Cody. He will need to shed some weight to reach his full potential at the next level, but even despite his current size he moves pretty well and does have the ability to get after the Quarterback, he will make everybody in the front 7 better and immediately make their run defense better.
#11) Jacksonville Jaguars- Brian Price (DT U.C.L.A)
---
Jacksonville, another team that collapsed down the stretch needs to add some talent to a front 7 that has struggled. Brian Price would be a great pick for them, as he has been shooting up boards as of late, at 6-2 300 he has very good size, and great athleticism, he tied for the lead in country with 22.5 tackles for loss and had 8 sacks which is extraordinary from the DT position, obviously he excels at getting penetration and disrupting plays in the backfield, he also is very good against the run, he plays with good leverage and has a quick first step, which demands that he receive a double team, freeing up the pass rushers on the outside and could change the whole dynamic for the Jaguars D-Line. Other options here could include ILB Brandon Spikes, or DE Derrick Morgan.
#12) Miami Dolphins- Jerry Hughes (DE/OLB T.C.U)
---
QB Chad Henne played very well down the stretch for the Dolphins, solidifying his spot as Miami's QB of the future, starting next season, and combine that with Ronnie Brown's return to the wildcat, the Dolphins could have a very scary offense next season. And with some good pieces on defense, they aren't that far away from being a contender, so they are in a position to select the best defensive player in the board who in our eyes is Pass Rushing phenom Jerry Hughes. Hughes is the best pass rusher in the draft, who was extremely productive in college in getting after the Quarterback tallying 26 sacks over the past 2 seasons for T.C.U. He is extremely fast off the ball, has great speed, a high motor, and a great repertoire of moves to keep Tackles on their heels. Nobody really better to learn from the Jason Taylor and Joey Porter too. Great value for the 'Phins.
#13) San Francisco 49ers- Joe Haden (CB Florida)
---
The first of the 49ers 2 first round picks. Joe Haden is of the best player available at this point, and it is at a position of need, the Niners have had a very difficult time stopping teams passing attacks, as 80 Million dollar man Nate Clements has been ineffective and injured. Joe Haden is far and away the best corner in the draft, he is a very physical corner who excels in bump and run coverage, he can man up with the big wide receivers in the N.F.L, and has the speed and technique to keep up with the fastest receivers. Great value for the Niners and could be the steal of the draft.
#14) Seattle Seahawks (Via Denver)- Taylor Mays (Safety U.S.C)
---
The Seahawks get this pick from Denver is last years trade of Alphonso Smith in the second round last year. After addressing the O-line with the number 6 overall selection the Seahawks can go best player available, and Taylor Mays really falls into their laps here. Seattle really needs help at safety, and you can bet new coach Pete Carroll would love to take a guy he is familiar with and coached for 4 years. Mays has phenomenal speed, unofficially clocked at 4.25 in the 40. He is a physical freak who moves sideline to sideline extremely well, though he doesn't offer as much in picking off passes as Eric Berry, Mays is great in coverage, he can play man coverage against receivers and tight ends alike, and has great instincts in zone coverage, and is great against the run. This pick just makes too much sense for Seattle.
#15) New York Giants- Earl Thomas (Safety Texas)
---
New York really struggled in pass coverage this year, as their secondary was ravaged by injuries, most notably to Kenny Phillips who was a rising star, but suffered a very serious, potentially career threatening knee injury early on in the season. Earl Thomas, a Redshirt Sophomore had a great season for the Longhorns in which he intercepted 8 passes, and returning 2 of them for Touchdowns. Another in a long line of Safeties out of Texas, Thomas seems to be all over the field, he has great ball skills, and is very skilled in coverage. Maybe a bit undersized, and needs to improve in run support, but should be exactly what the ailing Giants defense needs.
#16) Tennessee Titans- Derrick Morgan (DE Georgia Tech)
---
Morgan is rated as our 9th overall player, and at 16 the Titans could not pass this guy up, the best 4-3 Defensive End in the draft, he has great size at 6-4 272, he has a bevy of moves, both power and speed, which make him a nightmare for Tackles, and Quarterbacks. Sometimes can prove to be unblockable, fundamentally sound, uses his arms and hands very well, quick feet, and explosive around the outside. Can be inconsistent at times like many defensive ends, but Tennessee cannot afford pass up this talent at 16.
