2010 NFL Mock Draft Analysis

Updated: April 23rd

#1)St Louis Rams- Sam Bradford (QB Oklahoma)
This was a lock from the get-go, the Rams got their franchise QB that they desperately need, after being convinced that Bradford's shoulder was fine. I would have taken Suh, just because I feel he is a once every 15 years type of guy, while there is a QB of Sam Bradford's caliber in every draft. Don't be surprised to see a long holdout here, as Bradford will likely be looking for the largest rookie contract ever, looking to build off Matt Stafford's 41.7 million guaranteed last year.
#2)Detroit Lions- Ndamukong Suh (DT Nebraska)
This pick also has been pretty much locked down since the Combine, Suh is the best player in this draft, and fills a huge position of need for the Lions. Suh is a transcendent prospect, unlike anything we have ever seen from a defensive tackle out of college before, leading his team in tackles for 2 straight seasons. Detroit will be very pleased, and Suh should instantaneously transform their defense from being atrocious, to average.
#3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Gerald McCoy (DT Oklahoma)
The top 3 picks of the draft have been set in stone for months, and everybody knew this was going to happen. Gerald McCoy would be the number 1 defensive tackle in most years if not for Suh, he is a pass rushing tackle who will play the 3 technique, compares very well to how Tommie Harris played a few years ago with the Bears. Able to use his athleticism and quickness to penetrate the line, and bring pressure on the Quarterback.
#4) Washington Redskins- Trent Williams (OT Oklahoma)
Washington desperately wanted to move out of this slot, but evidently nobody wanted to move up and they were stuck with taking the tackle they felt fit best in their system. Trent Williams is very overrated in my opinion, and passing on the safer more established tackle in Okung was a mistake. Fact is that Williams (Not matter what the analysts tell you) had a bad Senior season in his first year at right tackle, and while I do agree that he is very talented, he did not deserve to get picked this high. Very risky pick for Washington.
#5) Kansas City Chiefs- Eric Berry (Safety Tennessee)
Good for Kansas City for doing what nobody though they would do in the weeks leading up to the draft and taking the best player on the board. Eric Berry is an outstanding safety prospect, in the mold of Ed Reed. While many had them projected to take a tackle, the draft is all about value, and Eric Berry at pick number 5 is a great value. He will immediately make their defense better, and if Kansas City can give him even a little bit of help, he will be a perennial pro-bowler.
#6) Seattle Seahawks- Russell Okung (OT Oklahoma State)
Seattle was no doubt ecstatic when the top left tackle in this years draft fell to them at pick number 6. Seattle has a huge need at tackle with the retirement of Walter Jones, and it needed to be addressed here or at #14. Okung is as reliable as they come, N.F.L ready, and has very few weaknesses. While it may be true that if Trent Williams reaches his full potential that he would be better than Okung, Okung comes with zero baggage, and will do just fine for himself. Great pick for the 'Hawks!
#7) Cleveland Browns- Joe Haden (CB Florida)
Cleveland was another team that really would have liked to trade down, unfortunately for them they were not able to and this pick was pretty much a lock as well if Eric Berry was off the board. Joe Haden is the clear-cut best cornerback in the draft, has great speed, athleticism, physicality, and proved it on the highest stage at Florida. Haden will be their #1 cornerback from day 1, and should be able to significantly reduce teams exploits on Cleveland's secondary.
#8) Oakland Raiders- Rolando McClain (ILB Alabama)
Everybody was waiting for what the Raiders were going to do crazy this year, was it going to be Bruce Campbell, Jimmy Clausen, or Punter Zoltan Mesko for all we know about how the Raiders draft. Actually in the end, the Raiders made a very sensible selection, taking Stud inside linebacker Rolando McClain. While very few people ever projected this pick in a mock draft, it actually does make sense. Oakland needs a leader on defense, and McClain is exactly that, has unprecedented leadership, and an extremely high football IQ, not to mention his top notch athleticism and physicality. Nicely done by Oakland.
#9) Buffalo Bills- C.J Spiller (RB Clemson)
This pick was a surprise to most, as pretty much everybody had Buffalo pegged for a tackle, and with Bryan Bulaga still on the board, he seemed to be the logical selection. Instead the Bills once again took a running back in the first round, despite already having 2 quality ones on the roster. I know the Bills will get rid of Lynch, but they still had the very respectable Fred Jackson, and had much more pressing needs that at running back. Add that to the fact I am not a huge C.J Spiller fan, and needless to say, I give the Bills a thumbs down on this one.
#10) Jacksonville Jaguars- Tyson Alualu (DT California)
Every year in the first round there is the inevitable, "Huh?" "WTF?" "Really?" pick that makes zero sense to anybody, this year it was Jacksonville taking Tyson Alualu in the top 10. I like most people viewed him as a second round prospect, who projected to play in a 3-4 defense at the 5 technique. At California Alualu played both the DT and the DE position, never really excelling at either. He is undersized to play tackle, and not athletic enough to play defensive end, which is why he would have been much better served in a 3-4 defense. Alualu is a solid player, but could have been picked up at least 12-15 slots later. Maybe Jacksonville will be laughing at all of us in a few years, but for now, it is us who will be doing the laughing.
#11) San Francisco (From Denver)- Anthony Davis (OT Rutgers)
Excellent pick by San Francisco, they were lacking a left tackle and in my opinion got the second best one of the draft, better than Trent Williams. While Davis does have some character issues that scared teams in the top 10 off, based on San Francisco trading up for them, they must have alleviated their concerns about that, and realized that if he keeps his head on straight he is a great player. At 6-5 325, he has great size, and is very athletic, carries his weight well, and overall is supremely talented, great pick for the Niners.
#12) San Diego (From Miami)- Ryan Mathews (RB Fresno State)
San Diego obviously was intent on replacing L.T and had their hearts set on Ryan Matthews, seeing as that they traded a 2nd rounder, and linebacker Tim Dobbins to move up 16 spots to take him. I am not a big fan of taking Running Backs early on in the draft unless they are of the Adrian Peterson caliber, so I wasn't a huge fan of the pick, but if they believe that Ryan Matthews is going to be "The Guy", then it was a good pick for them in that sense.
#13) Philadelphia Eagles (From Denver)- Brandon Graham (DE Michigan)
This pick was a pretty big surprise to most being, not because it was Brandon Graham, but rather that it wasn't Earl Thomas. The prevailing rumor before the draft was that Philly was desperately trying to move up in the draft, presumably to draft a safety, Earl Thomas, so when they were able to trade up and they passed on Earl Thomas it was a bit of a surprise. Philly needed a pass rusher, and while I feel that Graham would have been a much better fit in a 3-4 defense, I am not going to bet against Brandon Graham as a player in the league.
#14) Seattle Seahawks (Via Denver)- Earl Thomas (Safety Texas)
After filling their biggest need for a franchise left tackle with Russell Okung at #6, Seattle was able to take ball-hawking safety Earl Thomas to shore up their 29th rated pass defense. Earl Thomas is a bit undersized, but other than that he has everything you want out of a safety, has fantastic instincts, evident by his 8 INT's last season, and can fly all over the field. Great draft for the Seahawks!
#15) New York Giants- Jason Pierre-Paul (DE South Florida)
At first I, like others was surprised by this pick, but really everybody that the Giants wanted were off the board, and they decided to go with best available on their board. Their top options were, C.J Spiller, and Rolando McClain, but since they were both gone, they went back to the well and are going to try to reestablish themselves as one of the top pass rushing teams in the league. Osi Umenyiora is probably gone, and the future of Justin Tuck and JPP is a scary thing to think about.
#16) Tennessee Titans- Derrick Morgan (DE Georgia Tech)
Derrick Morgan was the ideal scenario for the Titans, they desperately needed a 4-3 defensive end, and Derrick Morgan was the consensus top pass rusher in the draft. Morgan has proven, unlike JPP, that he has the skill set to be a productive pass rusher, he is a very safe pick who will no doubt have a long career as a player who consistently able to sack the quarterback. Great value for the Titans at #16.
