Overall
Cam Newton is one of the best athletes you will ever see, but I am not at all a fan of his as an NFL QB prospect, and would not take him to be a franchise QB in round 1. There is no question that Newton is an extraordinary talent, but all to often, people confuse being a great talent, with being a great quarterback. Mobile quarterbacks with bad mechanics just do not succeed in the NFL. Players like Mike Vick and Randall Cunningham are the exception to the rule, and in NFL History there are only about a handful of Run-First Style quarterbacks who have succeeded in the NFL. Nothing that Cam Newton did as a passer at Auburn will be used at the next level, everything that he learns will all be new to him, which right away denotes a 1-2 year waiting period. Newton also will need to learn how to take the ball out from under center, and move through numerous progressions and get the ball out on 3, 5, and 7 step drops. And on top of all that, he has an elongated delivery, and poor footwork. I don't mean to pile on the kid, I really do love his talent, but the odds of him putting it all together are very slim. He will be a top 10-15 pick based on talent and cache, but unfortunately I think he will be a huge disappointment.
