As Free Agency has began to slow down it is the perfect time to take a look at the team needs for each team as we get closer to the 2019 NFL Draft. Listed below are the Detroit Lions Team Needs as they head into the 2019 NFL Draft listed in order of importance.
Detroit Lions Team Needs
Darius Slay has been one of the top corners in the NFL for several seasons. The play opposite Slay has also been lacking for several seasons as well. Former second round pick Jalen Tabor has failed to develop into a reliable running mate for Slay and while they brought in free agent corner Justin Coleman he is more of a nickel back.
2017 first round pick Jarrad Davis has had his ups and downs and the Lions relied on mid-level free agents Devon Kennard and Christian Jones to round out their linebacking corps last season. Finding a rangy linebacker to compliment Davis’ physical style would help elevate the Lions defensive unit.
Last season’s trade of Golden Tate turned the Lion’s receiving corps from a major strength to a position of need this off season. Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay are a strong duo but after that the depth is pretty lean. Signing Danny Amendola helps but is a short-term fix at best. Finding a dynamic slot receiver to compliment Golladay and Jones would help fill the void left by Tate’s departure.
Eric Ebron never really lived up to this first round draft selection and thus was let go last off season. Ebron went on to have a renaissance of sorts in Indianapolis last season and made the Pro Bowl while Lions tight ends were basically non-factors all year long. The signing of free agent Jesse James helps he is more of a number two tight end and lacks the playmaking ability the Lions could use at the position.
