As Free Agency has began to slow down it is the perfect time to take a look at the team needs for each team as we get closer to the 2019 NFL Draft. Listed below are the New England Patriots Team Needs as they head into the 2019 NFL Draft listed in order of importance.
New England Patriots Team Needs
New England’s system allows them to be an elite offense without having to need a physical freak at receiver. With only Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett under contract it is time for the Patriots to replenish. Look for the Patriots to pick up cheap veteran or find a player like Andy Isabella on day three to be their next breakout star.
Under Bill Belichick the Patriots defense has always relied on massive space eaters at defensive tackle. New England had a duo last year of Malcom Brown and Danny Shelton, but both were on the final year of their deals. Shelton could be resigned, but the Patriots need to find at least one more big body to help stuff the run.
Much like Tom Brady it is only a matter of time before Rob Gronkowski retires and leaves an enormous hole. Iowa’s Noah Fant would be a logical apprentice, but he could be long gone before the Patriots pick at 32. Likely New England would have to wait till the later rounds and could take a chance on San Diego State’s Kahale Warring.
New England should be fine at tackle as Isaiah Wynn returns from his ACL injury and Marcus Cannon continues to play at a high level. Yet it is no guarantee that Wynn will be fully back to 100% and is still unproven at the NFL level. New England won’t take a tackle early but investing a day three pick on somebody with potential.
The way Tom Brady plays he could be leading the Patriots for another four years. At some point New England has to look to the future and find that eventual replacement for Brady. Unfortunately, this draft class is lacking in good talent so they either have to take a project or possibly make an offer to the Cardinals for Josh Rosen.
