As Free Agency has began to slow down it is the perfect time to take a look at the team needs for each team as we get closer to the 2019 NFL Draft. Listed below are the Pittsburgh Steelers Team Needs as they head into the 2019 NFL Draft listed in order of importance.
Pittsburgh Steelers Team Needs
The Steelers have a knack for drafting receivers on day two as we’ve seen them take JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Wallace and Emmanuel Sanders over the last several years. After the trade of Antonio Brown to the Raiders it looks like the Steelers may have to work their magic again to find someone to fill Brown’s spot on the outside, so Smith-Schuster can stay in the slot.
A big reason for Pittsburgh’s success on offense has been their offensive line that has consistently graded out as one of the top three units in the NFL. Times are changing after Marcus Gilbert was traded to the Cardinals creating a hole. The Steelers put an emphasis on athletic tackles to go with their zone blocking scheme, so finding the right fit will be necessary.
Inside linebacker has been a need for a while but the injury to Ryan Shaizer has made that need even bigger. Pittsburgh wants to have an athletic run and chase linebacker that can go sideline to sideline and if Michigan’s Devin Bush is available at pick 20 it will be very difficult for the Steelers to pass him up.
After being shredding by the Patriots and other high-profile offensive attacks the Steelers have been slowly going away from their zone-based coverage. It started with Artie Burns but he has been a total bust as a first-round pick. Luckily, they were able to get Joe Haden, but they need to find some help opposite of him.
Alvin Dupree gives the Steelers an ultra-athlete at the outside linebacker position, but he has failed to give them the pass rusher they hoped they’d be getting. Finishing 29th in sacks the Steelers cannot trust that Dupree will turn on a switch and find a pass rushing specialist. Georgia’s D’Andre Walker would be a good fit and not cost them a high round pick.
