Is Herbert the Dolphins Choice?

While there have been reports of the Dolphins preferring Tua Tagovailoa as their choice, Miami Herald reporter Armando Salguero has word out that it may end up being Justin Herbert as the Dolphins choice.

One source said the Dolphins are not just concerned about Tagovailoa’s return to full health from the fractured and dislocated hip he suffered last November, but also about his durability in the long-term beyond the current injury…..The Dolphins generally love Herbert’s size (6-foot-6 and 237 pounds), his arm talent, and his mobility, which he displayed in the 2020 Rose Bowl when he ran for three touchdowns.

Our Take: The notion that Herbert could be drafted ahead of Tua should not be a surprise because of concerns about Tagovailoa’s injury issues. Herbert gets a bad rap but he’s a much better prospect that he’s gotten credit for and his combination of arm talent, athletic ability and size is going to be very intriguing to NFL teams. And if the Dolphins have hesitations about Tua’s health, Herbert should be a good consolation prize.

Dolphins Locked in on Tua

During Senior Bowl Week Charlie Campbell of Walterfootball.com always does a great job of reporting out behind the scene news for NFL teams. This year he passes along that not only has owner Stephen Ross attended an Alabama game to watch Tua, but that the Dolphins are locking in on him.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross traveled twice last fall to watch Tagovailoa in person, a rare occurrence for a team owner. In speaking to sources with the Miami organization, it sounds like Tagovailoa going to Miami with that pick is a near lock.

Our Take: Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft there was a rumor that the Dolphins were going to pass on drafting a quarterback and wanted to wait till the 2020 Draft to target guys like Tua Tagovailoia or Justin Herbert. So it’s not a surprise that the Dolphins has done a lot of homework on Herbert and now there are reports of them being locked in on Tua. With Ryan Fitzpatrick already on the roster and having some success the Dolphins will not be in a rush to play Tua and can let him develop and continue to heal from his hip injury.
