Looking to make some big moves to get the Cardinals back into playoff contention, the Cardinals were quiet outside of signing Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon. With the 2018 NFL Draft just around the corner here is a look at the Arizona Cardinals Team Needs heading into the draft.
Arizona Cardinals Team Needs
The signings of Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon are both short term potential solutions to a major roster hole after the retirement of Carson Palmer. The Cardinals should look to the draft to bring in their heir apparent, who will have the luxury of being eased into the starting role in year two if not sooner.
Adding Justin Pugh was a step in the right direction to shore up the interior of their offensive line. Unfortunately, more competition needs to be brought in this offseason to continue to rebuild the protection up front.
Finding a partner for Patrick Peterson that can patrol the opposite side of the field has been an ongoing need for the past few seasons. With the recent release of Tyrann Mathieu additions to the defensive backfield in general are a must.
The ageless Larry Fitzgerald is returning for his fifteenth season, however the team lost John Brown this offseason and Fitz can’t play forever, at least we assume. The Cardinals will continue to add weapons in the passing game to both help their new quarterback and eventually replace Fitzgerald.
It wasn’t just the interior of the offensive line that failed to produce last season. The Cardinals will look to add depth and completion at both tackle spots through both the draft and free agency. A team can never have enough quality pieces up front to protect their investment in the quarterback position this offseason.
The loss of Calais Campbell and the lack of production from former first rounder Robert Nkemdiche was felt along the defensive side of the ball in 2017. Finding a player who can stop the run while applying pressure is no easy task, but the Cardinals would be wise to grab Breeland Speaks if he falls to them early on day two.
More weapons for an offense looking to take a major leap in 2018 is never a bad idea. The Cardinals have tried to get by with mediocre players like Troy Niklas or past their prime options like Jermaine Gresham for too many years. They need to look to bring in a mid-round option in what looks to be deep tight end class.
