DL Jonathan Allen, 6’3 286 Alabama
What He Does Well:
Good athlete with excellent short area quickness and burst. Quick off the ball and gets to full speed in a flash. Possesses the best hands of any defensive linemen in the draft, combines great placement and brutal force to defeat blockers and push linemen around. Great closer when keyed on a ball carrier. Has good strength which he uses to bully linemen and set and maintain the edge against the run. Consistent performer over his three seasons as a fulltime starter.
Where He Needs Help:
Size may limit him, lacks the bulk to play inside and the length to defend the edge in the NFL. Lack of length may limit his best asset, his hands. Questions about his overall athleticism, succeeded largely because of his impeccable technique and hustle can he turn to his athleticism when need be? History of issues with both shoulders, showed up at combine with less than stellar bench showing. Has always been surrounded by elite talent at Alabama.
Allen surprised many by returning for his senior season after his impressive junior season (12 sacks, 14 tackles for loss) but succeeded in raising his draft stock with another solid season(10.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss). His technique and violent hand usage really set him apart from the rest of peers in this draft class. Barring any setbacks with his shoulders Allen should be surefire top ten pick and will make a team looking for an interior pass rush very happy for the next decade or so.
