Kyler Murray Rumors | Not These Teams

The saga of Kyler Murray continues with yesterday’s tweet from Murray announcing that he will be committing fully to being an NFL quarterback. He doubled down on that by hiring Erik Burkhardt who is an NFL agent. This news doesn’t necessarily mean that Murray cannot still go back to the Oakland Athletics, but does make it clearer that he is likely going to be draft. With this news the Kyler Murray NFL Draft rumors will continue to build and we take a look at some possible landing spots.

Kyler Murray Rumors

We’ve looked in the past at Murray’s game and how it translates to the NFL and it’s clear that his talent level is that will translate to the NFL, but there is clear concerns about his size and whether or not he could decided to go back to baseball. That being said let’s look at some teams that we can probably cross off the list.

Arizona Cardinals

As soon as Kliff Kingsbury was hired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals people were able to find a video of Kingsbury before Texas Tech’s game against Oklahoma where he said that he’d take Murray with the first pick in the draft. Now some wanted to run with that and project trades that would send Josh Rosen to another team so that the Cardinals could draft Murray.

And while there hasn’t been any talk of the Cardinals shooting down those rumors, that finally happened with team owner Michael Bidwell. During an interview on radio station 98.7 Bidwell squashed the rumors and said the team will be building around Josh Rosen.

“Josh is a smart guy, he’s been around and he’s seen what happens year in and year out,” Bidwill said. “There’s always a lot of speculation that turns out to not be true. But moving forward, we’re going to continue to build this team and build around the foundation that we have.”

This shouldn’t be too big of a surprise. Rosen was clearly the best quarterback in last year’s talent rich draft and would still be the top quarterback in this draft. And while Murray is fun to watch and is a dynamic, it would have made no sense to trade Rosen because of Murray.

New York Giants

For the last couple of years it’s been known that the Giants need to find an eventual replacement for Eli Manning who is clearly at the end of his run. New York tried to get by with Eli last year and drafted Saquan Barkley and while Barkley proved to be a good acquisition, Eli continued to struggle and was a big reason for the Giants issues.

So that leads us to this year and the Giants are routinely mocked a quarterback and that normally being Dwayne Haskins from Ohio State. But what about Kyler Murray. Can you imagine the Giants offense that features Odell Beckham Jr., Evan Engram and Saquan Barkley all getting the ball form Murray? Offensive line issues? They can be negated a bit with Murray’s elusiveness. But for how much fun that seems, it doesn’t look like it will happen.

Why? Because size matters to the Giants. They are still early in their evaluation process and obviously haven’t seen Murray at the Combine or his Pro Day yet, but in general, a team source said he’s “probably a little too small” for them. They prefer to stick to the established measurables they have for a prototypical quarterback.

As it was written by Ralph Vacchiano the Giants are one of the franchise that sticks to the traditional models of prototypical size matters. They want a big quarterback that stands 6’3 or taller. That all but eliminates Murray from the discussion. Too bad, because this offense would be a lot of fun.
