Mack Wilson | Next Linebacker Up

In the Nick Saban era the Crimson Tide have routinely put out elite linebackers. Whether it’s Rolando McClain, Dont’a Hightower, CJ Mosley, Reggie Ragland, Reuben Foster, or Rashaan Evans the it’s not out of the question to call Alabama Linebacker U. It’s literately been next man up for Alabama and that guy this year is junior Mack Wilson. With Wilson stepping up as the leader of the group it’s only natural for us to look at whether he’ll be the next first round linebacker to come out of Alabama.

Why Mack Wilson Could be Taken in Round 1

Wilson is at his best attacking forward against the run and making plays on the ball. Whether it’s shooting gaps or going through running lanes he’s able to use his burst to close and make tackles. What also helps Wilson be a good run defender is his ability to take on offensive lineman and then use his lateral agility to quickly get off the block and make the tackle as the running back runs by. Wilson can also display power when he explodes forward being able drive back guards and create penetration into the backfield.

Why Mack Wilson won’t be taken in the First Round 1

While Wilson is a good run defender he seems to lack that extra gear that could make him elite and more than just a downhill thumper. Whether that is not being able to cut off running backs on wider runs or even make explosive moves laterally he just seems to leave some plays of the field.

Against the pass Wilson tends to mainly sit back in a zone over the middle or on an occasion blitz or rush the passer. Wilson is capable floating over the middle but he doesn’t have the fluidity or change of direction skills to consistency cover up the top move tight ends or the speed to stay with some backs. Wilson can get home on some blitzes but it’s mainly off of movement where he gets a free run at the quarterback.
