The Denver Broncos have had a very tough season and this is going to be a big summer for them, full of tough decisions. Their biggest is who they play at quarterback next season and whether they draft one or go into the free agency market to try and pick one up there. Questions still remain unanswered but it could be in the 2018 NFL draft where they find their best fit.
The Broncos finished 4th in the AFC West, with a 5-11 record and that was well below expectations in Denver. They have to find a way to quickly improve over the summer and come out fighting next season. After winning three of their first four games, things looked to be going well for the Broncos, but they simply fell apart after their bye week. A run of eight defeats in a row and a record of 2-12 after their bye week has led the Broncos to a very tough summer.
Three different quarterbacks played for the Broncos in 2017; Trevor Siemian who began as starter, Paxton Lynch, who began as backup, and the shock return of Brock Osweiler who solved an injury crisis. Despite three players getting a shot at taking the job, none of them impressed and it is now time for someone else to takeover in Denver.
One name that you will hear over the coming months in the lead up to the draft is that of Baker Mayfield. The fans of the Broncos like him and, recently, the team have also shown they want to take a closer look at him by requesting to coach him in the upcoming senior bowl. The Broncos clearly want to give him the once-over and this move could also be a sign that Mayfield is currently in pole position when it comes to the Denver starting job for next season.
Should the Broncos pick up Mayfield with their number five overall pick, their biggest problem of the summer will be solved. Mayfield may be a great fit – or he may be a bust – but the Broncos have to stick with him and give him some time to develop into a starting NFL quarterback.
There is no doubting that Denver have a top quality defense, and they have players who can contribute offensively. Unfortunately, those players have had no chemistry with quarterbacks in recent years and, with a new player coming in, the team will be hoping they can find something that pulls them together.
The team’s struggles are reflected in the latest betting, with the Broncos struggling to make an impression on the bookmakers this time around. However, Ladbrokes have a welcome offer available when over at Champion Bets, with a bonus of $500 on offer; it’s far from a guaranteed Super Bowl Win but it will be interesting to see how the odds and tips fluctuate when Denver do sign their quarterback for the 2018 season.
Should Mayfield be the man, and should he build a connection with Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, the Broncos will find themselves in a much better position next season, and armed with the right tools to make a huge push to climb the table.
It has been a poor year for the Denver Broncos in 2017 but 2018 and the year of Baker Mayfield will give them hope of turning things around.
