Mekhi Becton NFL Draft Profile

Height: 6’7 Weight: 360 School: Louisville

Positives

  • Very powerful, particularly in the upper body. Can throw defenders around if gets a good angle on them.
  • Ideal length. Not many players in the NFL will be able to out reach him.
  • Feet are incredibly light for his size. Glides to mirror pass rushers and protect the edge.
  • More athletic than expected. Can get up field on screens second level blocks.

Concerns

  •  Does not use his hands well enough.
  •  Punch is much weaker than expected for a man of his size and strength.
  •  Too often will lean into defenders as opposed to driving them.
  •  Has trouble engaging defenders in space; not ideal for zone blocking scheme.
  •  Doesn’t get as much push at the point of attack as he should.
  •  Might be too big.  Trouble firing out and unable to make a cut block consistently.
  •  Will lose leverage with his natural size.
  •  Vulnerable to inside pass rush counter moves.
  •  Has struggled with weight over the course of his career.

Summary

A rare combination of size, strength and agility. If he puts it all together he could dominate at the NFL level. However, he isn’t good from a technical aspect and has a long way to go.  As a result his place strength is much weaker than you would expect. He probably needs at least one year on the bench to be developed.

Projection

Because of his physical gifts, I’d expect Becton to be drafted in the third round. He is a high upside lottery ticket that comes with a big payday. That being said, the risk might be similar odds to buying a lottery ticket. Based on his film he is more of a day three prospect. He has a lot of technical work to do, from his hand usage to his punch, to his pass protection, to driving through his run blocks and maximizing his raw power. Because of all these flaws that need to be ironed out, there is a higher chance that he never lives up to his potential.
