With a totally new regime in New York the Giants have been quietly building their roster to fit the defense of James Bettcher and the mindset of new General Manager David Gettlemen. With the 2018 NFL Draft just around the corner, here is a look at the New York Giants Team Needs heading into the draft.
New York Giants Team Needs
The signing of Nate Solder will provide a major boost to one of the worst offensive lines in 2017. The move also allows former top pick Ereck Flowers to move to the right side, where the Giants need to bring in competition for the right tackle spot from the draft.
Eli Manning is entering his fifteenth season under center for the Giants. His time at the helm is quickly coming to an end, and unless the team is completely sold on last year’s third round pick Davis Webb as the heir apparent, they should use their opportunity of picking at the top of the draft to grab a top tier replacement.
Bringing in Jonathan Stewart was nothing more than the team setting themselves up to go with a running back by committee approach in 2018. Wayne Gallman showed some potential last season but finding more competition from the middle rounds would be a major improvement.
Bringing in a replacements for Jason Pierre-Paul since he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It wasn’t too long ago that the team rode their stable of pass rushers to two super bowl victories. If the Giants don’t go with Bradley Chubb with the secon pick, look for prospects like Josh Sweat or Dorance Armstrong to fall into their laps on day two.
The most logical choice for the Giants to instantly continue to improve the left side of their offensive line is to select Quenton Nelson with their number two overall pick. If they choose to go in another direction using a day two pick on the position is a must.
The duo of Eli Apple and Janoris Jenkins looks good on paper, but internally the previous coaching staff had issues with Eli Apple and his locker room presence with the team. We will see how Pat Shurmur’s staff handles him but looking for his possible replacement and much needed depth anyways will lead to the Giants selecting at least one cornerback in the 2108 draft.
Depth is needed behind the monster duo of Dalvin Tomlinson and Damon “Snacks” Harrison. Look for the team to bring in another budget free agent and continue their strategy of grabbing mid round defensive line prospects who take a tumble down the draft board.
