Word broke today from USA Today’s Tom Pelissero that both Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon and Baylor WR Ishmael Zamora will not get an invite to the NFL Scouting Combine that starts on February 28th. While nothing has been said, the NFL did implement a rule last year where a prospect will not be allowed to participate if a background check shows misdemeanor or felony convictions involving violence or use of a weapon, domestic violence, sexual offense and/or sexual assault. Videos of both players are out there where Mixon assaulted a woman and Zamora was seen abusing his dog.
The significance of both not being invited to combine is huge. Despite the video of Mixon punching a women there was still reports and several Draft Analysis saying he could go as high as the second round. Mixon is a dynamic running back with elite speed and burst as talent wise is in the discussion with Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook as the top running back in the draft. If invited Mixon could have easily put on a show at the Combine and made it easier for teams to draft him higher than they would have before.
The same goes for Zamora who at 6’4 220lbs has the size teams crave out of receivers and his athletic ability would also allow him to put up eye popping numbers. While Zamora didn’t put up enormous numbers in his sophomore season catching 63 passes for 809 yards and eight touchdowns, he is seen as a raw athletic receiver with #1 potential.
Both players will still get to work out at their respective college pro days, however do miss out on the exposure and the amount at the Combine. Not to mention the ability to meet with every teams entire front office.
With all that said both of these players did horrendous acts that are completely unacceptable and make even talking about their football talents hard to do. I’ve even personally thought about completely taking Mixon out of my rankings all together. Other players such as Dorial Green-Beckham and Frank Clark have done horrendous acts themselves and still found their way to be drafted in the second round, having the video of these two makes their cases different. While i could be wrong I don’t see either player going in the first two days of the draft and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Mixon go undrafted. I could be wrong, but I don’t hope so.
